Jessies essay about a slave's story
*The students read an article that told about a slave who lived long ago named Jeffrey Brace. He was captured in Africa and brought to America. He eventually wrote a book about his experiences as a slave. The students discussed why historical books like this are important to us now.
My name is Jessie. I live in a small town in Alaska. In school we learned about slavery. We read Henry’s Freedom Box and Harriet Tubman. I think stories like Jeffrey Brace’s are important because they teach us what life was like for a captured slave.
Jeffrey Brace was a slave. He was from Africa in a boat. They made him go to America. He did not want to be a slave. It was a bad life.
We don’t want bad things like that to happen again. It helps us know how people felt. They were probably very sad and very mad.

Jessie's essay about robot suits
*Jessie's essay is about an article we read in class called "A Robot Suit". Scientists in Japan have developed a robotic suit that can enable those who have lost the use of their legs to walk again.

My name is Jessie. I live in a small town in Alaska. I like to run and jump and play. I would be sad if I couldn’t do those things. I would be sad if the people that I loved couldn’t. I think a robot suit is a good idea cause it helps people.
The robot suit has wires and it is metal and other things in a computer.
It helps people walk. If someone shattered their leg the suit could help them walk. It’s for people who have legs but can’t use them again. If people are old and their legs are weak, the suit helps.
